Star Academie 2012 Goes Double Platinum

Given the current dishonourable language segregation in the Canadian music industry, it is exceptionally difficult for a Francophone album to achieve gold/platinum certification in Canada. But because Canadian Francophones, though outnumbered by Anglophones 5:1, have learned to support their artists (something that Anglophone Canadians could learn to do), we have seen the odd Francophone album achieve platinum sales.

The album featuring covers of popular Francophone songs by the 2012 Star Academie contestants has done even better than that. Last week, the album was certified double platinum making it the best-selling 2012 Canadian album to date.

English Canada decided to do away with the Canadian Idol series and many of its finalists and winners have fallen off the map with a few noteworthy exceptions like Carly Rae Jepsen and Jacob Hoggard. But French Canada has done nothing but intensify things, bearing in mind, however, that the past few seasons took place 3-4 years apart (2005, 2009, 2012). Congratulations to Val-d’Amour, New Brunswick’s Jean-Marc Couture who won the 2012 season.

The album opener, “Toi + Moi”, which is performed by all 14 finalists is a cover of a song by French singer Grégoire which was a hit in 2008. The Canadian version made it to #31 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 charts, an incredible feat.
