Canadian Artists Honoured by the BRIT Awards

The BRIT (British Record Industry Trust) Awards gala is the United Kingdom’s equivalent of the Junos and has not been around as long. There was a ceremony in 1977 but not another one until 1982 when it began its annual run. Like the Junos, most of the award categories are for acts within the nation only with a few “international” categories like Best International Newcomer, Male Artist, Female Artist, Group, and Album.

Nominees of their international categories have usually been American or Irish acts with the odd nod to other European artists, like Iceland’s Bjork, or acts from Australia.

While Canadian artists have been regular features of the American Grammy Awards, which is why listing them would be too daunting, Canadians have not been paid as much attention to by the BRITs. The first Canadian artist to be nominated for a BRIT award was Bryan Adams in 1992 for Best International Solo Artist. The first Canadian artist to win a BRIT was k.d. lang in 1995 for Best International Female.

As of 2011, only five Canadian artists had won a BRIT award; 14 have been nominated. The implication of this is that it is a great honour. In all, there have been 35 award nominations and six wins involving Canadian artists. Though commercially less successful than the other Canadian artists, The Arcade Fire has received the most attention with two wins out of seven nominations. 1996 saw the most nominations of Canadian artists with five. Canadian artists did best at the 2011 gala, winning three awards.

Below is a summary of all Canadian artists who have been nominated for and who have won a BRIT award (to 2011).
