HEADLIGHTS BY THE RIVER AND THE ROAD
This is a folk-rock band from Vancouver. Members are: Andrew Phelan – vocals and guitar, Keenan Lawlor – vocals and banjo, John Hayes – bass, and Cole George – drums. Headlights was 3 years in the making and one can tell the band worked hard in crafting a batch of solid tunes. There is a lot of roots inflected music coming out of Canada, and this is one of the better works. iTunes

LOVE SONGS FOR ROBOTS BY PATRICK WATSON
Patrick is a songwriter from Montreal. He has been nominated twice at the JUNOs. More successful as an album artist, 3 discs have achieved gold certification to date. The way things are going, this has a chance of securing his fourth. It hit #1 on iTunes upon release. Love Songs for Robots contains sensitively sculpted songs in the alternative field. iTunes

LOYALTY BY THE WEATHER STATION
More roots music comes our way thanks to Toronto’s Tamara Lindeman recording here under project name The Weather Station. The presentation is done more in a laid back vein, fit for a peaceful locale. Tamara weaves in both folk and classical elements, as if Gillian Welch has collaborated with Loreena McKennitt, say. One thing is clear: the songs on Loyalty are stunning in their beauty. iTunes

POWER IN THE BLOOD BY BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE
Simply a legend, one of our finest songwriters, whose roots lie in Saskatchewan’s Qu’Appelle Valley, is back in top shape. Buffy is a JUNO winner and Hall of Fame inductee and though known for writing big hits for others, is adept at recording her own. Power in the Blood is a fantastic album and in our opinion her best in decades. It harnesses a potpourri of style – roots, pop, rock, even a hint of EDM – recorded in Toronto with three producers including Jon Levine. iTunes
