The MuchMusic Video Award nominations have been announced, though through the years the monstrous spectacle has proven to be less about who wins the awards and more about exotic red carpet arrivals, dazzling performances, and glamorous celebrity presentations. And that’s probably the way it should be.
Up for Video of the Year are Arcade Fire who claim we exist, Grimes who just wants to go, Kiesza who has a beanstalk dangling from her chest, Majid Jordan who’s all about her, and The Weeknd for being there often.
Pop Video nods go towards The Weeknd because he earned it, Shawn Mendes because he is something big, Scott Helman because he’s glorified the bungalow, Lights because she’s still running, and Hedley because headlights can be heavenly.
EDM/Dance nominees are Zeds Dead for losing you, Torro Torro for his village of cash, Mia Martina for unlocking the beast, Kiesza for the friendly giant in her heart, and Greadtheft for keeping keys and crates at 100.
Rock is lumped in with Alternative and as such we have the edge of a Nickelback, talk about a dress in July, Death From Above 1979 being virgins, a leather jacket worn by Arkells, and, yes, a fire in the arcade still exists.
Up for best director are Sam Pilling who often does weekends, Common Good who turned down Joaquin Phoenix for Majid Jordan’s Her, the Bouchers for going with Grimes, Ohji Inoue for aiding and abetting in Grandtheft, and David Wilson for firing up the arcade.
Most buzzworthy Canadian nominations go to The Biebs, Drake, Kiesza, Mendes, and The Weeknd.
