The 43rd annual American Music Awards (AMAs) took place tonight at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, USA. Three of the four red carpet performers were Canadians: Francesco Yates, Alessia Cara, and Shawn Mendes. Mendes was also a presenter at the gala along with fellow Canadian Kevin O’Leary.
Gala performers included Justin Bieber, Alanis Morissette, Céline Dion, and The Weeknd! Alanis teamed up with Demi Lovato for two generations of girl power.
The Weeknd performed with a stage literally on fire! He won multiple awards including for Favourite Album – R&B/Soul and Favourite Artist in the same genre. He was presented with a trophy by none other than Prince!
While The Weeknd had everything up in flames, Justin Bieber had to provide a little water action. He performed a medley of three songs: “Where Are U Now” which won the Collaboration of the Year Award with Skrillex and Diplo, “What Do You Mean”, and “Sorry”.
And, yes, the best-selling Canadian recording artist of all time Céline Dion performed Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à L’Amour” before a series of beautiful backdrops of Paris. Many in the audience – both men and women – were bawling. It was truly magnificent.
