The annual Eurovision song contest, alive since 1956, is a very big deal in Europe. It broadcasts in 60 countries to more than 100 million viewers. It is responsible for launching the career of ABBA, speaking of which this year’s contest takes place in Stockholm in May. A few Canadians have participated over the years. Natasha St-Pier represented France in 2001 and Céline Dion won the competition in 1988 for Switzerland. This year of 2016, another Canadian will be representing Switzerland: Vancouver’s Rykka.
Though born and raised in Vancouver, Rykka does have familial ties to Switzerland, as her grandfather was Swiss, and she has spent some time there. She will represent the country by performing her own original song, “The Last of Our Kind”, which she co-wrote with Vancouver’s Mike James and Jeff Dawson of Milk Music, a publishing company in a joint venture with Nettwerk One Music. We have embedded a live acoustic version of the song below. Wishing Rykka good luck!
