Chart Analysis: Top 100 of 1979, LG73, Vancouver

1979When you grow up listening to a radio station in your city, the most requested songs and the weekly countdown become your reality. Later on, you meet people who remember a song being a big hit but you have never heard of it, and vice versa. Charts on local radio stations can be quite different from those nationwide, as stations (hopefully) support local artists and have different preferences along with the city’s demographic. We stumbled across the year-end top 100 of 1979 from hit radio station LG73 (CKLG AM) in Vancouver. It is interesting comparing this chart with the corresponding RPM national chart which likely was influenced more by what was going on in Toronto. A total of 23 songs on the LG73 chart did not appear on the RPM one, and some did not even make the weekly Top 100 RPM charts. Here are notes on a few of them.

#19. “All My Love” by Led Zeppelin. This big hit in Vancouver which never appeared on the RPM charts may have been relegated to airplay on the album oriented rock FM stations in the rest of Canada rather than the hit single AM stations. It was a #1 hit on the weekly countdown in Vancouver.

#21 & #53. “The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car” and “3 Dressed Up As a 9” by Trooper. These songs did not make the RPM year-end chart, though did the weekly Top 30. As the band is a Vancouver one, the songs were more popular on the west coast. The group’s nationwide album sales, though, were record breaking.

#46. “Let Me Take You Dancing” by Bryan Adams. The North Vancouver boy was no doubt embraced first by Vancouver radio. This was his first single and first big hit.

#54. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” by Long John Baldry. This singer was English but ended up settling in Vancouver and became a Canadian citizen. This fabulous cover of the song by The Righteous Brothers featured American blues singer Kathi McDonald. Apparently Bill Medley of The Righteous Bros. said he preferred this to his band’s original. It reached only #45 at RPM weekly, #89 in The States, but was a massive hit in Australia at #2.

#55. “Here Comes the Night” by Nick Gilder. This was the followup to the Vancouver singer’s smash “Hot Child In the City” from 1978. It made it to #21 at RPM weekly.

#62. “Here Comes the Night” by Streetheart. This is a cover of the Van Morrison song and different from Gilder’s of the same title. Streetheart was originally from Winnipeg but launched from Regina. The band was perhaps best known for its cover of “Under My Thumb” the following year.

#98. “Bang a Gong” by Witch Queen. You won’t find much info on Witch Queen on the net, because it is a Canadian studio band assembled by Verdun, Quebec producer Gino Soccio. The track is a club remake of the old T. Rex song. Gino Soccio’s own “Dancer” appeared on the RPM year-end chart.

The year 1979 saw an impressive variety of genres on the radio: from popular rock to dance music, the beginnings of new wave, a sprinkling of R&B, adult contemporary, and even country. Below is the year-end Top 100 of 1979 at Vancouver’s LG73. You can compare it with the RPM chart here.
