On the night of June 25-26, 2014, a new 15-year-old signee to Island Records topped the iTunes charts in both Canada and the U.S. with his debut single. Shooting to stardom via Vine, the Pickering, Ontario native had by that time accumulated just over 1 million Twitter followers (he now has close to 7 million). The single, which now stands at double platinum certification, was “Life of the Party” and its singer, teen star Shawn Mendes. Besides that single which reached #9, his string of hits includes “Something Big” (#11, platinum), “Stitches” (#10, double platinum), and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello (#19, gold). In the United States, the four songs peaked respectively at #24, #80, #4, and #20. While “Life of the Party” barely made the charts in Britain (#99) and “Something Big” did not, following promotional efforts, “Stitches” reached #1 with “Last Summer” peaking just outside the Top 40 at #42. The two singles were #4 and #33 respectively Down Under.

Shawn Mendes released his debut album Handwritten in April 2015 with re-issue Handwritten Revisited in November of that year. The album went platinum. He received a JUNO nomination for the 2015 gala and four for 2016 and opened for former country, pop makeover superstar Taylor Swift on her world tour.

Shawn plans to drop his second album Illuminate on September 23, 2016, and he has already released two lead singles, “Treat You Better” and “Ruin”. From the sounds of it, he is reaching for a richer, more sophisticated sound than the simple, stripped down ditties of his debut. “Treat You Better”, currently on the charts, is #10 in Canada, #4 in Australia, #13 in the UK, and #34 in the States. We have embedded its dark music video below which has attained 9 million views in its first 4 days. The sumptuously catchy song is about being in love with a girl who has an abusive boyfriend.

Mendes will promote the new album at a showcase on September 10 at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden. Prior to this, he tours the U.S. and Canada, and afterwards he plays for fans in Manila and Sydney.  iTunes
