Country music television (CMT), based in Nashville, U.S. has announced that Canadian superstar Shania Twain will become the first female to receive the channel’s Artist of a Lifetime award. The honour will be bestowed during the annual CMT Artists of the Year celebration airing October 20. This comes during a current country music climate in the U.S. that is both male heavy and largely exclusive of Canadian artists.
Shania Twain was born in Windsor, Ontario and raised in the province’s locale of Timmins. She is the only recording artist, whether foreign or domestic, to have scored three double-diamond (i.e. 20x platinum) albums in Canada. She has sold an estimated 75 million albums globally and remains the top-selling female country artist of all time worldwide. Shania has won 13 JUNO awards.
