Zeds Dead Hoist Northern Lights

Toronto electro-pop duo Zeds Dead (Hooks and DC) have, after a half dozen EPs, released a full-length album. Northern Lights, currently sitting at #5 on iTunes, is on track for a Top 10 placement on next week’s Billboard Albums chart. Though the duo has yet to score a Top 40 hit, a collection of feel-good pop anthems seems for now at least to be the way in which their music is best absorbed. Put on the disc for a fun, bouncy ride.

The album is a star-studded affair with a squadron of domestic and international singers and rappers including Dominican Republic’s Twin Shadow, Sweden’s Elliphant, The United States’ Rivers Cuomo (lead singer of rock band Weezer), Pusha T, Jadakiss, and Styles P, Australia’s GG Magree, The United Kingdom’s Ghetts, Toronto’s Dragonette, and Brantford, Ontario’s Jenna Pemkowski. (The latter released a very good alternative album with Toronto’s Memorecks called Follow back in January.)

While the music of Zeds Dead is often classified as EDM, the tracks on Northern Lights are not necessarily ripe for the dancefloor, but do hoist some bright lights and sparkling smiles into the atmosphere throwing some curve balls of rapping, dubstep, and a variety of voices to keep the whole affair astir. We have embedded track “Blame” below which will give you a taste of this superb album.  iTunes
