First Batch of 2017 Releases

New releases are usually scant from mid-December to mid-January. Things are set to pick up January 20. We do have a few new works at this point. Montreal early music collective Ensemble La Cigale has the first album of 2017 with January 6th’s Up in the Morning Early. It is instrumental baroque music from Celtic countries and offers us light and beautiful sounds. Its cover is fitting given Chinese New Year on January 28 ushering in the year of the rooster.

Blackie & the Rodeo Kings’ Stephen Fearing, born in Vancouver, gives us absolutely gorgeous singer-songwriter album Every Soul’s a Sailor. There’s a nice mixture of crisp, cool laid back numbers and more rollicking ones with varying degrees of roots and blues present. It is a rich, beautiful album that should please a wide spectrum of music lovers due to its quality.

Vaultry is a gifted band from Victoria. The new album Eulogy is quite impressive, essentially rock with alternative seasoning and atmospheric textures.

Toronto Billboard Hot 100 charting pop-rock duo USS, or Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, has managed to scale up to #2 on the iTunes albums chart with New World Alphabet.

New Brunswick’s Measha Brueggergosman specializes in gospel/inspirational music, and covers some of the classics of the genre on album Songs of Freedom.

Debut album To Bring You My Heart appears from Vancouver female trio The Katherines. It is a strong first release with lots of pleasing alternative pop tunes.

Also from Vancouver is rapper Moka Only. He was a collaborator and brief member of Swollen Members. His new solo record is called To the Next Season.

Barrie, Ontario duo Jupiter Hollow does a very good job at hard prog-rock on EP Odyssey. Have fun with this one!

A number of new singles are out, many of them heralding upcoming albums, and, as many sites have, we talked recently about the new track from Kiesza. Topping the musique Francophone songs chart at iTunes is the new song from rising young star Lenni-Kim, “Don’t Stop”. It is a bilingual pop song that even rhymes French words with English ones! We have embedded the sizzling neon lyric video below which has already surpassed 200,000 views.

Enjoy the new music.
