Canadian Hot 100, 3 December 2014

Paul-Brandt2New on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 this week is Paul Brandt’s “Get a Bed”. The Weeknd’s collaboration with Ariana Grande “Love Me Harder” enters the Top 10 and Trevor Guthrie’s “Soundwave” hits the Top 40. The latter is now top CanCon on CHR radio at #8. On the Albums chart, Fred Pellerin holds on at #4. Dallas Smith’s Lifted debuts at #14, Garou’s Xmas Blues at #19, and deadmau5’s 5 Years of Mau5 at #23. Dallas Smith’s “Wastin’ Gas” is top CanCon on country radio at #10 and MAGIC!’s “Let Your Hair Down” on AC radio at #7. MAGIC!’s “Rude” has become only the 3rd song in history from a homegrown artist to spend one full year on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100; it follows Finger Eleven’s “Paralyzer” and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”.

The Canadian Music Blog does not believe in being positive for the sake of being positive. There are poor decisions being made resulting in problems, or to use the corporate world’s favourite euphemism, “challenges”. Certainly, our addressing these on this site will not change anything. However, pointing them out may help assuage grief experienced by fans of Canadian music out there.

#1. It is clear now that Billboard Canada’s decision to incorporate streaming data into the Hot 100 has hurt Canadian content. This week, just 16 CanCon singles have made the chart. With the extremely wealthy American media promoting American music globally, which drives streaming choices among the public, Canadian artists now face dashed hopes of making the charts. This hurts not only the artists themselves, but also Canadian record labels and the Canadian music industry as a whole.

#2. Incorporating streaming data also significantly reduces the chances of a Canadian Franco song from entering the Hot 100. We have as such decided to include a “Top BDS Franco” into our Top CanCon Entry roundup below. To determine this, we look at the 7-day rolling Canada Top 40, all stations, currents-only chart published through Mediabase.

#3. The recent decision by the CFL to have a foreign act, Imagine Dragons, play the halftime show at the 102nd Grey Cup resulted in a 158% sales increase of the band’s single “I Bet My Life”. Imagine … what would have happened if the CFL had chosen a Canadian band to play the show. This is a missed opportunity.
