According to RPM magazine, the biggest song of 1968 in Canada was “Hey Jude” by The Beatles. It evolved from “Hey Jules”, which Paul McCartney wrote for John Lennon’s son, Julian. Just three songs in the Top 100 below are by Canadians (bolded in red), the most successful of which was Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild” (#14), the song that coined the term “heavy metal”. Note that a mistake made in the chart was that #62 and #70 as well as #60 and #73 were given the same entry. The Canadian charts are an accurate reflection of Canadian tastes in music, and the Top 100 songs were determined both from nationwide sales and radio airplay data. The drawback with year-end charts is that songs charting from the end of one year through beginning of the next will have their chart performance split between the two years. More year-end and other Canadian charts can be found here.
