The years 2001 to 2007 are problematic in terms of singles charts. After RPM magazine folded in November 2000, the only national charts were published by Nielsen SoundScan as The Canadian Singles Chart. These charts looked only at the sales of singles, not radio airplay. Prior to the digital era, singles (usually sold in CD format), did not sell well in Canada and many were not even available. Canadians were in the habit of buying whole albums, not singles. Some sources indicate that, at times, the #1 entry on The Canadian Singles Chart sold as little as 200 copies a week. The result is that many huge hits did not chart well or were even absent from the singles chart because Canadians never bothered with the single, buying the whole album instead.
With all its shortcomings, The Canadian Singles Chart is the only record we have of some of the more popular songs of the period. Below is a list of all singles from Canadian artists that reached their peak position within the Top 40 of the Canadian Singles Chart this year. As usual, we have all Canadian Franco songs that made the CKOI year-end Top 50. We have also included a list of the JUNO nominated songs released this year.
