There are not too many full-length albums out this week. In fact, the overall number to date (86) is down from the same time last year (105). Overall numbers (for both LP and EP releases) are about the same but for whatever reason, artists or labels are deciding to put out more EPs and less LPs. They are also quietly opting out of releasing physical copies. Only one of this week’s full-length albums appears to be available on Compact Disc: Twin Flames by Postdata (singer and co-writer of Wintersleep). You can order a copy from Paper Bag Records.
Blame the pandemic or blame ignorance, but this lack of CD audio availability essentially conveys the message from record labels: “Our artists’ music is not good enough to be listened to at a high bit rate”. You’ll have to settle for a low bit rate digital download or not own a copy but listen on a streaming service (usually at a low bit rate). In some cases, high bit rate downloads are available, but of course it makes little difference in the grand scheme of things: audio output from computers to whatever speakers are attached, output from an iPod or cell phone are all poor quality.
The only release this week from a JUNO award winner is a three-track EP from Drake entitled Scary Hours. Find a listing of this week’s releases below.
