Reminiscing Over Etiquette

Etiquette - ReminisceJulie Fader and Graham Walsh (the latter worked on LIGHTS’ Siberia album) are duo Etiquette, releasing debut album Reminisce. Avoid the danger of lumping the act in with other electronic outfits. The style ditches the spirit of wooden elation for animated melancholy. Our examination of the disc did not turn up any melody deprived blandness as with a number of other works in the genre; the hooks dangle in abundance as the music waddles its way through raw climes decked in some of the experimental garments worn by such predecessors as The Legendary Pink Dots and Cabaret Voltaire. It’s not all subdued; there are a couple of peppy inclusions that twinkle like stars on and on. Overall, on Reminisce, the ethereal drones effectively hypnotize in ways that will leave you reclining in satisfaction. iTunes

Ryan Hemsworth Is Alone For the First Time

ryan hemsworth - alone for the first timeJUNO winning, Halifax bred electronic musician Ryan Hemsworth has released new album Alone For the First Time. The former student of journalism has remixed works by Grimes, Lorde, and Beyoncé. The new album is a more cohesive production than his last, the overall tone being one of winding down and coasting along with some bouncing bleeps, whirrs, and beats. The brooding, R&B inflected vocals provide a nice contrast to the electronic glitter. This is like a chemist having fun with the mixtures, and the results work.  iTunes

Vogue Dots’ Mauka

VogueDots-MaukaBabette Hayward and Tynan Dunfield are New Brunswick duo Vogue Dots, now based in Halifax. Self-described as performing experimental pop, the sound is melancholy, melodic electronica with deep moods and dark ambiance. The pair has released 4-track EP Mauka, a strong followup from last offering Toska, released earlier this year. The new record is tightly structured with solid composition, and when Babette’s vocals smack the synth chill, the sonic landscape fills with frozen honey. It’s a great start and we’re excited for Vogue Dots’ future.  iTunes
